#2 Cover Love - May 2014

Hey guys! I'm back with some May new release covers. Unlike last month, I didn't have my favorites already picked out and had to do a great search from google to goodreads to blogs to find out what was released this month in the first place. There were some pretty or simply cool pieces out there, yes, but honestly I felt that this month's average was a lot duller (<-- weird word, or is it just me?) than the usual. I know this is only my second Cover Love post on this blog, but I've more or less kept my eyes open ever since I joined the Internet's book society.

But even so, I've found what I was looking for!

And the cover of the month is...

...Rebel by Amy Tintera!

Something simple this time. Maybe you can already tell that I like blue shades. But even if some other color was used, I don't think it would've stayed far behind. Although the cover looks simple enough, the designer has artistically used lines to make every item on it match. This font with those long letters just blends in. The glowing effect adds a nice touch. And black covers tend to be overall beautiful, in my eyes!

Some others that caught my eye:

Again, the picking of my favorite covers was not affected by my thoughts of the books' contents. I've never read anything from any of the four authors.

If you think there are some even more amazing May release covers out there that I didn't mention, post them in the comments! I'd love to see what you think and maybe you even get to change my mind! But for now, have a nice day, everyone!

Excerpt

Lil stood firm, sword-in-hand, staring at the beast as it flew directly at her. “How do I kill it?” She raised the sword above her head with two hands.

Hudson glanced at her. “With what we taught you. The dragon is no different than a man.”

“It has wings and is flying at me. I’d say it’s different!”

Inquisitor Cover
Inquisitor by R.J. Blain

When Allison is asked to play Cinderella-turned-Fiancee at a Halloween ball, the last thing she expected was to be accused of murder on the same night. She has to find the killer and quick, or she'll be put to death for the crimes she didn't commit. To make matters worse, the victims are all werewolves.

On the short list of potential victims, Allison has to act fast, or the killer will have one more body to add to his little black book of corpses.

Excerpt

Caroline was either the best actress I’d ever seen, or she was really dead. I crouched next to her, torn between touching her neck to feel for a pulse and running away before the sweet scent of a fresh kill overwhelmed my restraint.

A clock chimed ten. The power of the full moon slammed into me, tugging at my heart, and tightening my chest. The need to embrace my inner beast and become one with the night quickened my breath.

Scents flooded my nose. Strong perfumes mingled with cologne, and the sweat of hot, living bodies stirred my hunger. I licked my lips, and for one brief moment, imagined the salty sweetness of fresh blood on my tongue.

There was another hunter in the room with me, and they taunted me with their kill. Their prey was either dead or left to die. It was a challenge to the scavengers, to the hunters, and a warning to the prey.

“What do you think?” Mark’s mother asked.

“I think she’s an amazing actress,” I replied, careful to keep my tone light. I rose to my feet. If I grew a tail, I could only hope my gown would hide it long enough for me to slip from the party and find a place to gain control over myself.

Or complete the change and go on a rampage.

Another minute passed in silence. I shook my head. “This would be why I’m not a police officer.”

The Wicked Witch of the West giggled. I shivered at the sound. “I see. Very well, Cinderella. Shall we mingle with the other guests and learn about this terrible, terrible deed?”

“I thought this was when Mark was supposed to come rescue me from a fate worse than death,” I muttered.

Oops. So much for keeping civil. I guess it was inevitable. Bodies brought out the worst in me. Especially when the body wasn’t one of my making. To make matters worse, I couldn’t exactly raise the alarm.

If I did, I’d reveal to those who knew the truth about werewolves and witches that I wasn’t just some human girl after a wealthy boy. Then the Inquisition would find silver old enough to kill me or reduce me to ashes to make certain they purged the world of one more rogue werewolf.

“Why can’t you be wealthy?” Mrs. Livingston lamented.

The old woman’s question caught me by surprise. Had she heard me? Did she think it an amusing quip?

Was it possible the woman actually liked me? Confused at the question, I answered honestly. “Ma’am, who says I’m not? I’m your son’s accountant. Do you really think he’d trust someone who didn’t have access to at least some money with his money?” I glared at the old woman. At least the brewing fight between us distracted me from Caroline’s body a little. “Don’t forget I know exactly how much he makes a year, where he transfers his funds, who owes him how much, and whom he owes. I know how much he’s paid in taxes, and I know how much I saved him last tax season.”

The witch’s mouth dropped open. “Just what—”

“I paid more in taxes than he did last year. I’ll let you do the math. Unless, of course, he learned how to count from you.” I pivoted on a heel and stalked my way towards the refreshment stand.

Praise for The Almond Tree

“The story is spell-binding with universal appeal…”
The Daily Star

” …a strong addition to coming of age fiction collections, highly recommended.”
The MidwestBook Review

“…one of the most riveting books I have read…
Corasanti takes a realistic premise and builds an interesting and highly believable story that only gets better as the pages fly by. While “The Almond Tree” is a fictional tale, much of it is based on the truth of what is today’s world, and as such there is also an important message located within. I highly recommend this book.”

Excerpt

“Forget everything you know about grim reapers, Ophelia. Humans have it wrong. It’s easier to believe in angels and demons, than to see what’s right in front of you. Review - The Return by Brad Boney

For once, a review of a recent read, not something old and edited. This one's a gay romance with a small paranormal element, which I think should appeal to both those who like supernatural and those who prefer realism.

Genre: M M / Romance / Paranormal
My Rating: 5 of 5 stars
Released: July 4th 2013

Description:
Music. Topher Manning rarely thinks about anything else, but his day job as a mechanic doesn't exactly mesh with his rock star ambitions. Unless he can find a way to unlock all the songs in his head, his band will soon be on the fast track to obscurity.

Then the South by Southwest music festival and a broken-down car drop New York critic Stanton Porter into his life. Stanton offers Topher a ticket to the Bruce Springsteen concert, where a hesitant kiss and phantom vibrations from Topher’s cell phone kick off a love story that promises to transcend ordinary possibility.

My review:
First off, I hadn't read any gay or other GLBT books before this one, so my review is based on this one time experience.

Not that I was wary of picking this genre up, but the only reason I read this book was pretty much the fact that my sister won it and said it was good. Turns out she was right. This book tells the story of Topher Manning and features some characters that were present in Brad Boney's previous book, THE NOTHINGNESS OF BEN, which I haven't read but heard it'd be best if you read them both. Topher makes music and dreams of becoming famous with it. One day he meets Stanton Porter, a music critic, and gets a free ticket to a Springsteen concert. An unexpected kiss starts a series of events and reveals another story some twenty years in the past.

The chapters are in turns in present and past, but it wasn't annoying or distracting. I loved both of them, loved the connection between them and between the characters in different eras. A lot of this book consisted of dialogue. While many authors have trouble with a good dialogue, or simply write most of their story in long and thick descriptions, THE RETURN was a case I had not encountered before. One could say there was too much dialogue, and at the beginning I considered lowering my rating, since most of it didn't really seem to matter to the plot. But all this dialogue sounded so real, so natural that I soon began to enjoy it. The characters made it great.

Speaking of characters, I think there wasn't one that I didn't like. I often find it a bad idea to have too many main characters - in this case six, ten if you count the past - but Brad Boney pulled it off well. The boys were awesome, which made the sad points even sadder. I also liked the side characters, even when they didn't get to play a big part. For some reason I really loved the story of Brendan and Trent and would've liked to hear more of it.

There is something about connecting past and present that really gets to me. It's hard to explain. And I think there is some magic in the whole reincarnation thing, although the last page turned a bit... cheesy? But if there was a third book, with new main characters, taking over this reincarnation element, I'd probably love it.

Music was an important part of this book. I'm not a very 'musical' person myself, I can't play any instrument. I do love to listen to music, of course, but a lot of the references used were unfamiliar to me. Still, I like learning new things!

In general, it was all very sweet and I'd love to see more of it. Another great book I've read this year!

Review - Dolphin Way: Rise of the Guardians by Mark Caney

Originally written over a year ago, this is the review of the first ever book (or anything at all) that I won. A real gem, I must say :)

Genre: Animal Fiction
My Rating: 5 of 5 stars
Released: January 1st 2011

Description:
Dolphin culture evolved over millions of years so that they could remain perfectly attuned with their world, Ocean. Unlike man, they have created an almost utopian society without feeling the need to manipulate their environment, collect possessions or wage war. But the growing pressure of man’s activities become intolerable and in frustration one faction seeks an aggressive new path. They make a shocking departure from the Way — the ancient philosophy that has guided them so well through the millennia.

Sky, a male dolphin close to becoming an Initiate in the Way, unwillingly finds himself caught up in the violent consequences. To save the lives of his closest friends he will have to risk the worst punishment his clan can inflict and must decide between the two females who challenge everything he believes in.

My review:
I won DOLPHIN WAY from a First Reads giveaway on Goodreads. I had never won anything before in my life, so it's needless to say I was extremely happy. It was also the first autographed book to sit on my shelf.

I have to admit, though, when I first saw it among the giveaways, I did not pay much attention to this book. I'm not sure what changed my mind, I never had any idea what to expect from this. I remember reading a few reviews before deciding to give it a try. And suddenly, I won!

And I'm so very happy I did. DOLPHIN WAY captivated me with the first pages. The story was brought to readers very realistically - in my opinion. At first I considered it completely fictional. The dolphins having such high intelligence, their own beliefs, the way they talked to each other just like humans do... I mean, I knew dolphins are quite intelligent creatures, but as I got further into the book, I began to think, could something near that really be true? How smart are they really? I've heard a lot of interesting stories about them before, but this book really got me thinking.

Touches The Sky went through a lot throughout the book. Many friends were lost. Life was unfair. That reminds me of the description of the book. I don't think the society was very utopian there. Maybe yes, if everyone were to follow the Way. Or even if to understand why the Guardians were as they were. But it seemed way too easy to become an exile.

I liked how you could distinguish between the characters. They didn't blur into one as it sometimes happens in books, instead they all had their very own personalities. I think One Eye was especially interesting. Who was he really? I also liked how we humans - or Walkers - were brought in. It was fun to read how the dolphins imagined us.

In general, I'm gonna say I definitely loved this book. There were a few small details that I disliked, but not big enough to deserve a mention. Like for example using ' instead of " in dialogue. It was confusing at first, but I quickly got used to it. I recommend DOLPHIN WAY to everyone, both adults and teenagers. Although from the point of view of dolphins, it's not a children's fairytale, but a very well written story of how human behavior affects the sealife.

I'm happy to have read this book and can't wait for the sequel DOLPHIN WAY: CAPTURED. I really hope to hear more about it soon!
